16P - Photon: Motor shuddering

16P - Motor Shuddering

Symptoms

You are riding or starting to ride your ebike when you experience a shudder in the motor. This can also be described as "stuttering" or "shaking". You may or may not have an error 26 or hall sensor error on your display.

Reasons

  • Hall sensor failure
  • Firmware issue

Checklist

  1. Ensure that you have the latest firmware
Connect to the CYC Ride Control App and go to the Firmware settings section. Please update your firmware if prompted to do so.

Troubleshoot

  1. Determine if your ebike starts shuddering when starting to ride or only after a few seconds.
  2. Determine if your ebikes starts shuddering if you are applying full throttle in a higher gear at your cassette (i.e. under high load).
  3. Check if you have a hall sensor error or error 26 on your display.
  4. Check on your display or on the CYC Ride Control app in which motor RPM range the shuddering happens.

Solution

1. Replace the motor

If the kit starts shuddering within the motor RPM range of 1 to 2500 RPM (i.e. when you start riding), then the hall sensor has failed and will need to be replaced. This may also be accompanied by the hall sensor error or error 26. Replace the motor core accordingly.

*Note that the motor stops shuddering after the motor RPM reaches 2500 because the system will then activate the "sensorless" mode automatically.

2. Contact CYC

If the kit starts shuddering under high load when using full throttle and it's running above 2500 RPM, then it is likely a firmware-related issue. In this case, contact CYC directly and attach a video along with a brief description of your findings in the "Troubleshoot" section above. Our technical support team will advise accordingly.
