23SG3 - X1 Stealth Gen 3: Chain comes off

X1 Stealth Gen 3: Chain comes off

Symptoms

Your bicycle's chain comes off the narrow-wide inner chainring while riding

Reasons

  • Your chain does not have enough tension
  • The chainring's profile is worn out
  • The chainline is out of an acceptable range
  • You are riding very bumpy terrain

Checklist

  1. Inspect the slack on your chain
  2. Check the condition on the teeth of your chainring
  3. Check if you have followed the bottom bracket spacer arrangement on the user manual as the spacer placing has an effect on your chainline

Troubleshoot

  1. Check that your chain has enough tension to comfortably move through your cassette's range without excess slack
  2. Inspect the condition of your chainring's teeth (or profile). If the teeth are noticeably worn out, you may need a replacement. Note that if you are riding under heavy load often, your chainring's lifepsan will be affected.
  3. Adjust the bottom bracket spacers provided in your kit as necessary to get a better chainline. You may use the user manual as reference for the spacer placement but each frame is different and you may need to rearrange the spacers accordingly.

Solution

1. Adjust your chain tension

Chain's may stretch over time or your set up may have not been ideal. You can remove a link from your chain or purchase the correct length chain if needed. There are many ways to get the correct chain tension so be sure to check out online resources about your components.

2. Replace the 104BCD Narrow-wide chainring

You can purchase a new 104BCD chainring directly from CYC or from our authorised CYC reseller.
